On the Road to Fire Prevention
The Kid's Safety House is a two-story, RV-type trailer that features child-sized rooms and real-life hazards like smoke and
heat. It is geared specifically to preschool to 4th-grade children and provides them with the skills and knowledge needed to prevent
fires and the steps to follow if they ever find themselves in need of escaping a fire.
Educators can teach about many
fire hazards in a setting familiar to children with one-on-one interaction that creates an ideal learning environment.
America Is Facing Some Alarming Statistics
Fire can be devastating to both life and property. The latest fire death figures show that nearly 5,000 Americans die in home fires
each year. The vast majority of these fire victims are elderly citizens and children.
Adults and children often do not know how to react when fire breaks out in a home. These grim statistics show the seriousness of fires and the need to increase our fire
awareness.
What's in the Kid's Safety House Curriculum?
The Kid's Safety house is designed to demonstrate home safety
to preschool to 4th-grade children in small groups of 10 to 20. The training curriculum was created specially for use with the Safety House
and is intended to:
- Teach children to identify and avoid fire and burn hazards
- Develop burn-safe
behaviors
- Teach fire escape and reporting procedures
- Teach survival actions in case a fire occurs
Some of
the specific topics taught in this training include:
- Living room hazards such as fireplaces, Christmas
trees, candles, and electrical outlets
- Stove and other hazards in the kitchen
- Discussion of bathroom safety facts
- Use of electric cords and outlets in the bedroom and the hazards of adults smoking in bed
- Exit drills in the home
including crawling low under smoke, checking doors for heat, and calling 9-1-1 from the closest phone
- Stop, drop, roll, and cool techniques
- Firefighter gear-up demonstration to show children how a fully suited firefighter will look in the event of a fire rescue.
Fire Safety and Prevention is just one of the many prevention and awareness campaigns that can be targeted through the use of the Kid's
Safety House. Accident and Crime Prevention, Stranger Awareness, and Poison Control is just a sampling of the various curricula that can be addressed in this mobile classroom.
