Take a Quick Tour of the Kid's Safety House

The Berks Kids Safety House The Kid's Safety House includes three of the most-used rooms in any house--a living room, kitchen, and a bedroom.--creating a unique, interactive learning environment for children.

Kid's Safety House Living Room features an artificial log fireplace where children learn the hazards of combustibles near heat sources and leaving an open flame unattended. The living room is also the setting for other lessons such as watching out for overloaded electrical outlets, and babysitter programs.

Kid's Safety House Kitchen uses operational appliances to exhibit burn and fire hazards such as pot handles sticking out, combustible materials near the stove, and many other common kitchen dangers, as well as poison control hazards.

Kid's Safety House Bedroom lets safety instructors teach fire escape skills in a realistic setting using electronically operated smoke detectors and nontoxic smoke that gives the effect of an actual fire. Children are taught how to roll out of bed when they hear the sound of a smoke detector and crawl low to safety.

The majority of the features of the Safety House are initiated from the control room. The individual operating this room controls the smoke system, monitors the temperature of the heated door, operates the roof ventilation system, and conducts the 9-1-1 training exercise.

In addition, the Safety House utilizes two one-way observation windows and a closed-circuit TV/VCR system to supervise both floors of the house. The audio-visual system can then be used as a teaching tool for showing videos or instructing from views captured on the closed-circuit cameras.
